We are lucky to be living in an age where science and technology are at the peak of advancement. Fortunately, technology is advancing at a rapid pace. There is a smart solution to every problem. Be it any field. There is an answer to every issue that leaves one wondering about the capacity of a man’s mind. Now, since we are talking about technology miracles, let us discuss some smart ways in which technology has helped in the field of medicine.Have you ever gone for an X-ray? The whole setup of an X-ray or rather the concept of capturing an x-ray to study the cause of malfunctioning of the human body is awe-worthy.

Have you ever wondered what happens if a patient is not able to go to the X-ray room? Mobile X-ray machines or portable X-ray machines come to the rescue in such situations.

What is a mobile X-ray machine?

Mobile X-ray machines, also, sophisticatedly called mobile radiographic unit consists of a trolley with wheels. The X-ray generator, either battery-powered or, electricity-fed is mounted on the trolley along with the X-ray tube with a moveable tube stand, collimators, and drawers to store film cassettes or flat-panel detectors. The units that are battery-powered contain a battery and charging system, whereas, self-propelled units contain a motor drive.

How does it work?

The working of a digital X-ray machine involves the x-ray tube (a tube with an anode and a cathode) streamed with electrons, accelerated to high velocities by a high-voltage, and it collides with the tube’s target anode. A set of collimators restricts the primary beam to the approximate size and shape, which covers the desired area for diagnosis. Mobile CR units catch pictures using a photostimulable-phosphor plate. Versatile DR units comprise of built-in or wired level board locators, which use a scintillator material to change over x-beams to obvious light. A variety of photodiodes on the ASI layer retains the light and interprets it into a sign for the computerized show. On certain units, the x-beam presentation is fueled legitimately from the line voltage. While on others, the info line voltage charges the battery that controls the x-beam introduction.

The steps of working are:

  • Preparing the patient and providing information regarding radiation shielding
  • Setting the unit around the patient and instructed to stay motionless while the image is capturing.
  • The operator switches on the exposure switch and activates the X-ray beam.
  • The operator may reposition the patient and can opt for extra images if need be.

Some facts about X-rays

Enough of the technical stuff. Let us now talk about some interesting facts about X-rays. We are sure you must be unaware of many.

  1. X-rays have been around for a long time. The day when Wilhelm Roentgen announced about X-rays in 1895, surgeons and medical practitioners started using X-rays for different purposes.
  2. X-rays have helped in detecting the structure of DNA. It has helped in amazing discoveries regarding diagnostic testing, understanding the human body, and getting hang of the optimal health.
  3. X-rays have multiple uses other than in the field of medicine. For years X-rays are used to see under the paintings. They are sketches the artist makes and use as guides to the final paintings. X-rays are also used to study artifacts, Egyptian mummies, and amber fossils. Interestingly, X-rays are used in space to catch a glimpse beyond the solar system.
  4. X-rays have influenced medical treatments of many types. Initially, they were used to treat tuberculosis. Currently, X-rays are used in the treatment of cancer.
